| Earthquake rattles Cowboys training camp |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 10:04:00 PM |
 |
News:
Leonard Davis rolled over to see if somebody was shaking his bed, but none of his Dallas Cowboys teammates were in the room. That s when the 353-pound offensive lineman realized he had just experienced an earthquake."I was just laying there, about to go to sleep," said Davis, who like many of his teammates had never felt such a tremor. The Cowboys training camp is about 90 miles from the city of Chino Hills, where a magnitude-5.4 earthquake hit at 11:42 a.m. PDT Tuesday."If that was a small one, I m all right. I can say I ve been in an earthquake, a tornado, a hurricane," guard Andre Gurode said. "I waited for a good 30 seconds until everything stopped, then I ran outside."At the time of the earthquake, the Cowboys were on their lunch break after morning meetings. It was about three hours before the start of their afternoon practice, which was held as scheduled. There was no damage reported at the hotel complex where the team is staying, which is next to the practice fields."It wasn t nothing major, just like the ground was moving," defensive lineman Marcus Spears said. "I was in my room upstairs, so we had to get downstairs. That was my first time. You don t get those in Louisiana."Linebacker Greg Ellis was outside preparing to do a radio interview when he realized the ground was moving."I was off-uard, just thinking maybe the wind is blowing. Then I realized the wind can t blow me that hard," Ellis said. "That was my first, hopefully my last. ... It s one of those things that I can say I ve been through it. Nothing happened, thank God. And I don t want to go through another one."Tight end Jason Witten was in the lunch room with abut 20 others. At first, he thought he might be feeling the effects of too many lead blocks on linebacker Bradie James. Then he realized other guys were also looking around trying to figure out what was happening. When coach Wade Phillips was with the San Diego Chargers, there was a minor earthquake he didn t feel because he was in his car at the time. The coach almost missed this one, too."I was on the elliptical (exercise machine) and I was going. I thought, Man, I m really going now, shaking this place down. So I didn t even notice it," Phillips said. "I thought I was really working out."

| Cowboys CB Newman out again with strained groin |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 9:59:00 PM |
 |
News:
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will miss at least three weeks of practice because of a groin injury, another early setback for the player coming off his first Pro Bowl season.Coach Wade Phillips said an MRI on Tuesday revealed a "significant" injury to Newman s left groin."We re a little disappointed because he plays the nickel for us, he really needs working at it," Phillips said. "We had some specific things we thought we could help him with, so it s going to slow down that process. But he ll just have to study those three weeks."Newman was on the field in shorts and a T-shirt for the team s only practice Tuesday, like he was for afternoon practice Monday after he got hurt in the morning session that day. Newman was injured when he became tangled up with a receiver during a play and his leg twisted awkwardly.Newman, the 2003 first-round pick going into his sixth NFL season, has refused to answer questions about his injury. This is the second year in a row Newman has been injured in the preseason. Last year, Newman was sidelined after the first preseason game because of a slight tear in the tissue in the base of his right foot. He missed the first two games of the regular season.Newman still had 62 tackles and four interceptions in 2007.The latest injury to Newman could mean more time for new cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, though Phillips said Jones would for now remain primarily at right cornerback behind starter Anthony Henry on the opposite side of Newman."We will move him at some point, but I want to make sure he feels comfortable before we start moving him around," Phillips said. "I think he could certainly do it and he s done it before. I want him to feel comfortable where he is in one place. ... When we get a feel that he s fine there, we ll flip him."But when the Cowboys started drills Tuesday, Jones was in Newman s spot with the first-team defense instead of rookie Mike Jenkins, one of the team s first-round picks. While the still-suspended Jones is trying to get back in playing shape after a year out of the NFL, he said this week he was trying to grasp the coverages in the Cowboys defense."He s a football player. He knows how to do a lot of things," Phillips said. "It s getting comfortable with what our terminology is first and then techniques that we want to try to help him do better, and then techniques that are involved in certain coverages that we have."Returning to the field Tuesday was linebacker Justin Rogers, who sat out Monday due to dehydration sustained when he practiced despite a virus the previous day.

| Bills QB Losman misses practice with damaged thumb |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 9:58:00 PM |
 |
News:
Buffalo Bills backup quarterback J.P. Losman was held out of practice Tuesday night, a day after jamming the thumb on his throwing hand.Coach Dick Jauron listed Losman as day to day, saying the quarterback s right thumb was too swollen for him to practice. Losman s thumb was heavily wrapped as he watched practice at Bills training camp facility in suburban Rochester. He was hurt following through on a pass attempt, when his thumb struck a teammate s helmet during the Bills first practice in full pads Monday. The second of Buffalo s two 2004 first-round picks, Losman lost his starting job to 2007 third-round pick Trent Edwards last season. Also on Tuesday night, starting free safety Ko Simpson missed the final hour of the two-hour session after jamming his left ankle in the artificial turf.Jauron said the injury isn t considered serious, adding that trainers held Simpson out as a precaution. The injury was to the same ankle the player broke in the Bills season opener last year, forcing Simpson to spend the rest of the campaign on injured reserve.Starting outside linebacker Angelo Crowell was held out of practice as a precaution after experiencing soreness in his left knee.

| Jags Williams activated from PUP list |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 9:46:00 PM |
 |
News:
Jaguars receiver Reggie Williams reinjured his right knee Tuesday night, hours after being activated.During the evening practice, Williams made a spin move after a reception and hurt the knee. He limped to the sideline, was examined by team trainers and then carted off the field to the locker room for tests.Coach Jack Del Rio declined comment, probably realizing he would face tough questions about whether Williams returned to the field too soon after an injury.Williams was placed on the physically unable to perform list as the team opened training camp Saturday. He said he sprained his knee running steps inside Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.Williams missed the first three days of camp, but he was back on the field Tuesday morning wearing a protective sleeve, running routes and catching passes.A first-round draft pick from Washington in 2004, Williams had his most productive season last year. Although he caught just 38 passes, he averaged 16.6 yards a catch and had 10 touchdowns. If his injury is significant, it would be another blow for Jacksonville s offense. The Jaguars already are without receiver Jerry Porter and center Brad Meester.Porter, who signed a six-year, $30 million contract in February to be the team s No. 1 receiver, had surgery nearly two weeks ago to repair a torn hamstring and will miss at least the entire preseason. Meester injured his right biceps Sunday and could be out even longer.Meester was planning to travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday to get evaluated by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

| Favre faxes retirement letter to NFL |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 9:26:00 PM |
 |
News:
Brett Favre s decision to file for reinstatement will force the Green Bay Packers to do one of three things: release him, trade him, or allow him to report to camp.If he reports, it potentially could cause a major distraction for a team that committed to moving on after he retired in March.NFL spokesman Randall Liu confirmed that Favre sent his reinstatement paperwork to the NFL offices Tuesday. He now is awaiting approval from commissioner Roger Goodell, a step that is considered a formality, but wouldn t be forthcoming until Wednesday at the earliest.Once Favre is reinstated, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide what to do with him."That s obviously the first step in Brett coming back, so we ll deal with that when he is reinstated and we ll definitely have a plan in order," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Tuesday afternoon.ESPN first reported that Favre faxed the letter earlier Tuesday. If Goodell reinstates Favre on Wednesday, his return to the practice field for the Packers could come Friday. The Packers practice twice Wednesday but can wait a day to put Favre back on their active roster. The team does not have a scheduled public practice Thursday.Throughout Favre s latest round of flip-flopping on his football future, Packers officials have said that Favre had the option of rejoining the team -- but Aaron Rodgers would be the starter."Brett Favre is still a very good football player," McCarthy said Tuesday. "He is an asset to our football team. Once again, I m going to answer this question for the last time. The plan for Brett Favre will be discussed with Brett Favre first, and then we ll make it aware to the public."McCarthy also said Rodgers will start all of the preseason games and probably get more playing time than Favre used to in the preseason."He ll be starting all of the games as the starter," McCarthy said of Rodgers. "We ve talked about possibly playing our first group maybe a little longer, and those are things that we ll discuss. The health of your football team obviously factors into that, so that is our plan going into the preseason with Aaron."Rodgers insisted he isn t bothered by the potential of having Favre lurking over his shoulder."You know, I m not as affected as you guys (the media) think I am or should be," Rodgers said. "They told me I m the starter, and until that changes, that s going to be my focus."Rodgers said he is confident in his abilities and the firm commitment he has received from Packers coaches."I ve been empowered as the starting quarterback and until that changes, I ll say it again, that s going to be my focus," Rodgers said.Rodgers said he and Favre have "never had a problem" and would probably "joke around" when they saw each other again."We ve got a great relationship," Rodgers said. "If he s here, we ll welcome him back."But some Packers players seemed skeptical that Favre would remain the backup if he ended up reporting to camp and wasn t traded away."I don t know about that," wide receiver Donald Driver said. "But we ll see. We ll see what happens."Cornerback Charles Woodson -- who chanted "We want Brett!" as he left the practice field Tuesday, but later laughed it off as "just having a little fun" with reporters -- seemed to think Favre could play his way into the position."Who knows how Brett feels about that -- if he s coming in as being the backup, or coming in and a potential trade is going to happen, I don t know," Woodson said. "But if he comes in as the backup, he just comes in and plays the way he knows how to play. And if it s better, then the organization has another decision to make."But Woodson said players aren t taking sides."There s no reason for anyone in the locker room to take sides or say in the media they prefer one guy over the other," Woodson said. "It s A-Rod s job, and at this point, it s his job to keep."McCarthy said Favre s presence wouldn t become a distraction."I m not concerned about it," McCarthy said. "We have talked about it

| Rams guard leaves practice with numbness |
| Tuesday, July 29, 2008 9:10:00 PM |
 |
News:
St. Louis Rams guard Mark Setterstrom left before practice Tuesday with numbness in his right leg and foot, which the team believed may have been caused by a brace pinching on a nerve. That assessment appeared to be confirmed Tuesday night when Setterstrom walked without effort as he left the team dining hall.A precautionary MRI exam was ordered for the third-year player, who had season-ending knee surgery after the third game last season. Setterstrom was one of three offensive line starters to finish the year on injured reserve, a big reason for the Rams 3-13 season.Setterstrom wears a brace on both knees.Rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery, the team s second-round pick, cracked a bone in his pelvis. Coach Scott Linehan said it was a very small crack and believed he d be sidelined no longer than a week or two, with rest prescribed."It s an unusual injury, but not a serious injury," Linehan said. "I think it s more of a pain tolerance type thing."The Rams signed 315-pound defensive tackle Henry Smith, released by the Patriots on June 12 after spending the offseason in their conditioning program. Rookie defensive tackle Josh Thompson, sidelined by a torn plantar fascia, was waived with an injury settlement.Tight end Anthony Becht has a hamstring pull that could keep him out a week, and linebacker Chris Draft did not dress because of lower back stiffness.
